The Light Crust Doughboys, Official Music Ambassadors for the state of Texas and two-time Grammy Award nominees, have been inducted into The Rockabilly Hall of Fame.
To be chosen for inclusion in the Hall of Fame, in Burns, Tenn., inductees must have attained significant achievements in rockabilly and related categories of music, and be recognized as leading pioneers, performers or recording artists in their chosen fields.
The Rockabilly Hall of Fame is also the headquarters of the Internet's No. 1 rockabilly website, www.rockabillyhall.com, where histories, music links and feature columns relating to the Light Crust Doughboys and other inductees can be accessed.
The Rockabilly Hall of Fame was created in March 1997. The first induction certificate was presented in honor of Gene Vincent on Nov. 16, 1997, and accepted by his sister, Sarah "Tina" Craddock, on behalf of her late brother. Other honorees have included Sam Phillips, Scotty Moore, D.J. Fontana, Johnny Cash, Rick Nelson, Wanda Jackson, Bob Moore and Cliff Gallup.
"We're highly honored to accept this award on behalf of the Light Crust Doughboys' legacy and tradition, past and present," said Art Greenhaw, a Doughboy member and co-producer of the group's Grammy and Dove Award-nominated albums. "This Hall of Fame is especially meaningful to me, since I've always considered rockabilly to be one of our primary musical styles with the Doughboys, and I admire so much the artistic achievements, the 'spit in the eye of the dragon' attitude and the authentic southern and southwest sound of all my rockabilly heroes."
Light Crust Doughboys Fan Club President Sharon Dickerson said the group was "there at the very beginning of rockabilly, leading the pack with their pioneering 'bass slapping' techniques, their super-early employment of electric guitar, and their bold and humorous musical lyrics."
The Rockabilly Hall of Fame induction certificates were presented to the band at its concerts this week at the Pocket Sandwich Theatre in Dallas, and will also be featured at the June 30 concert at Mesquite's Rodeo City Music Hall.
